SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN – MY CORE CLASS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQ
Q: What makes this class different than other self defense classes?
A: Great question! When I started taking martial arts at the age of 10, I was still living in the projects. I was tested everyday by kids bigger, meaner. I learned real fast that although in theory some of the self defense I was taking worked in a practice class, it wasn’t necessarily effective in a street brawl. Realizing that at such a young age got me studying over 6 different types of martial arts and defense including mma and street style ground fighting.
- My training takes into account the experience of my student, the goal of my student and I focus much more on instinct and reaction, in this class in particular. In this Core class, I need you to be able to react without thinking. Many times you won’t have time to think. So the defenses i teach you are very, very simple but they work.
- Secondly, my wife and I tested over a hundred ‘standard’ moves taught by the most popular self defense classes. I really needed to see if they worked. Surprisingly in a real world situation, most of them did not. So I had to create moves that were tried and tested. I make all my corporate clients test them at home with their families/friends so they feel comfortable knowing they work.
- This class is realistic. I want to make sure you understand that any defense counter attack you make, you need to expect the attacker to keep coming. He’s not going to just stop and say, ok, great move, I’ll let you go. So it’s important you really disable enough to run like hell.
So I know that was the very long answer, but it comes down to being much more realistically feasible, memorable and teaches you techniques less likely to create a panic response. Simple & Effective!
Q. You said realistic but in the video, you’re not really hitting each other?
A. Demonstrating real world attacks and techniques is tough. Because you can really hurt a person. I can say that you will see during one of the demonstrations, my wife got me good where it counts (and that was accidentally during a more aggressive instruction). While initially testing techniques, I will apply extremely strong holds/strikes and there have been minor injuries. Also remember that we need to clearly show in slow movement so you can clearly see how to perform the technique and learn it yourself.
Q. Do I need to practice this stuff? I don’t have years to get a black belt, will it work if I don’t practice?
A. These are very simple techniques and easy to learn. But again, the reason my class is different and I created these tactics to be so simple that they can easily become instinct. That’s not to say you can’t practice. By NO means do you need to devote the time that black belts need to learn their respective arts. But you do need to consistently practice these at least once a week, preferably more create that knee jerk reaction.
Q. Do you teach advanced self defense?
A. Absolutely. I teach both men and women that are more experienced and want to learn more complex and effective moves that combine all styles of fighting techniques. More classes will be offered over the next several months and while you are a member of my teaching platform at Skillshare, you get unlimited access.
